Assessments
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. If you’re thinking: Is it really this serious? Is this just a phase? What if nothing helps?
My assessment sessions are a compulsory – and genuinely valuable – first step. They help me understand what’s really going on, so we can decide together what support will make the biggest difference.
What we talk about
This is a non-diagnostic assessment. That means I’m not here to label, I’m just here to understand.
We’ll explore:
- What’s been happening recently (and what’s changed)
- Their developmental history
- How they’re currently functioning e.g. school, friendships and family life
- Anxiety, low mood, OCD, trauma symptoms, emotional regulation difficulties or other concerns
- Neurodiversity – and whether masking or overwhelm may be part of the picture
- Who they are – their hobbies, interests and personality
- What your child wants to be different
- What you, as a parent or carer, are worried about
Before we meet, I’ll ask you to complete some questionnaires. These are evidence-based tools recommended by the NHS and NICE. They give us a helpful snapshot and look at specific signs and symptoms – but they never replace you or your child’s voice.
How sessions are structured
For under 18s, assessments are usually 90 minutes: 60 minutes with the child/young person and 30 minutes with parents or carers. For young people aged 18+, sessions are usually 1:1 for 75 minutes. I can adapt this depending on age, confidence and need of the young person and their family.
What happens next
At the end of the assessment, I share clear verbal feedback. I’ll explain what I think may be maintaining the difficulties – in everyday language – and how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) could help.
If we’re a good fit, we agree next steps. If I don’t think my service is right for you, I’ll say so honestly and guide you towards more appropriate support. Your child’s needs come first.
Standalone assessments
You can also book an assessment on its own – for your understanding, or to share with school or a GP. A written report can be provided for an additional fee.
Assessments are not about judging your parenting or pathologising your child. They’re about understanding what’s happening beneath the surface – so your child can feel more like themselves again, and you can feel clearer about how to support them.
Fees
Under 18s: 90 minutes – £120
18+: 75 minutes – £90
